Born in Hiroshima in 1912, Shindo made several films about the atomic bomb, including Children of Hiroshima.
In total he directed 48 films and wrote 238 scripts.
He is best known for directing The Naked Island, A Last Note and Onibaba. His films had a style of art and montage and according to Joan Mellen, his films merged the sexual with the social.
Recently, Shindo celebrated his 100th birthday with a party in his hometown at which most of his films were screened.
